ScholarshipGreek letter organizations were founded on the principles of successful scholarship. The Greek system at the University of Evansville continues that tradition. Through study tables, tutoring and other programs established by each chapter, Greeks help their members to succeed academically. All sororities and fraternities have specific grade requirements for joining, as well as for remaining in good standing. In fact, Greeks have maintained an all-Greek GPA of 3.0 or better since 1996. LeadershipMembership in a Greek organization is a great way to discover and refine your leadership potential. Within each chapter there are numerous opportunities to assume a variety of leadership roles. Members share important responsibilities in operating the chapter. However, leadership is not limited to the chapter; there are many Greeks who play an active role in other campus organizations. Sororities and fraternities encourage their members to get involved in other facets of college life that build leadership skills. About 63 percent of Greeks on this campus are active in other campus organizations. Greeks are involved in, and hold offices in, almost every major campus organization including the Student Government Association, Orientation Leaders, Admission Ambassadors, Student Activities Board, Hall Councils and Resident Assistants. SocialOrganized social programs include formal dances, date parties and mixers, along with participation in homecoming, intramural sports, Musical Madness and Greek Week. Musical Madness is an event in which sororities and fraternities are paired together along with other campus organizations to create skits that include songs and dances based around a central theme. The money raised through this production goes to a philanthropic cause. In the spring, there is a time to celebrate the Greek system through various events during Greek Week. Numerous social activities allow students to develop friendships among the members of their chapter, as well as other members of the Greek community. Community Service and PhilanthropyThe Greek community’s interests and concerns go far beyond the confines of campus life. Both sororities and fraternities sponsor a multitude of activities each year to raise money for their chosen philanthropies. Events range from canned food drives to lip sync contests and hot-tub-a-thons. The Greek system continues to strive to help its members learn about helping others through philanthropic activities. Last year, the Greek community raised over $45,000 in charitable gifts and contributions. Every year Greeks donate over 1,500 hours of service to various non-profit organizations. Lifelong Brothers/SistersSisterhood and brotherhood are terms which mean more than wearing Greek letters, attending meetings and going to parties. It means that you have found a place you can call your home away from home. Ritual, scholarship, giving of oneself to the community and the feeling of belonging create lifelong bonds of sisterhood or brotherhood. Sisterhood and brotherhood mean joining a group of women or men in love and friendship. |
