In order to help make your recruitment experience a more enjoyable one, you will have a Gamma Chi, or Panhellenic Counselor, to help you along. There are 16 Gamma Chis. Each Gamma Chi is a sorority member who has separated herself from her sorority since the end of Spring Semester so that she will be prepared to objectively counsel you as you participate in recruitment. Each Gamma Chi will have a group of 10 to 15 potential members she will serve as a guide to. This small group will help make recruitment a more manageable experience for you. Even if you don't pledge, the friends that you make through your Gamma Chi and your Gamma Chi group will make recruitment worthwhile. Part of what makes your Gamma Chi a worthy confidante is that she is disaffiliated from her sorority so that you can freely share your thoughts with her. It is a secret which sorority she is a member of. The most important thing she wants you to know is that she is a member of Panhellenic, and the each of our 4 Panhellenic groups is great. She will reveal her affiliation to you at the very end of the week, so don't spoil the fun by trying to find out which sorority she belongs to before the time has arrived. Your Gamma Chi prior to recruitment will contact you in order to get to know you better as well as help you get to know the other people in your group. Knowing your other group members will give you that many more friendly faces to look for on campus as well as through the recruitment process. You will travel to all of the parties with your Gamma Chi groups. Your Gamma Chi will be there for you if you have any questions, concerns, or just want to talk about the process. All discussions held with your Gamma Chi are strictly confidential.
Pre-Recruitment SessionsWhat to expect: Information will be passed out to all girls signed up and interested in Greek Life. The purpose of these sessions are to inform you as a potential new member of the Greek Community and what to expect from the formal recruitment process. Pictures will be taken at the second information session along with funny skits put on by the Gamma Chis.
What to wear: Dress in whatever you were wearing for the day. These are pre sessions and there is not a dress code. Jeans and a t-shirt are perfectly acceptable, just keep in mind pictures will be taken on Tuesday, September 9th.
Wednesday, September 10 - Introduction PartyWhat to expect: There are four sororities that you will visit that night. Potential members will visit each one for 30 minutes. The purpose of this round is to introduce you to the Greek community. One woman will meet you at the door and serve as your hostess. You may feel a little overwhelmed, but don't be intimidated. This day is filled with high energy and includes loud music, clapping, and cheering. Each sorority has something unique and wonderful to offer, so be sure to approach each one with an open mind. What to wear: Dress casually and comfortably for the first night of formal recruitment. Skirts, nice shorts and casual dresses are appropriate. While it is important for you to be comfortable, t-shirt and shorts are a no-no.
DON'T DO
Thursday, September 11 - Casual PartyWhat to expect: These events are longer to allow time for potential new members and sorority members to become better acquainted. During the 40-minute events, potential new members will have another opportunity to ask each chapter questions about their sorority.
What to wear: Dress comfortably for this night of events. Nice shorts outfits, skirt outfits and casual dresses are recommended.
DON'T DO
Friday, September 12 - Theme Party: First Round InvitationalWhat to expect: Each potential new member may visit up to three chapters. Which chapters a potential new member attends is determined through a mutual selection process of the potential new members and each sorority. These events allow potential new members to see the personality of the women in each sorority as reflected in the skits they perform. This is an hour-long informal gathering that allows potential new members to determine which group they really feel a sense of belonging. The third night of formal recruitment is dressier than the previous nights. What to wear: Appropriate dress includes skirts, nice pants or a dress. Potential new members should wear clothes that make them feel confident and comfortable. DO DON'T Saturday, September 13 - Preference Party: Second Round InvitationalWhat to expect: The preferential round is the most serious round of recruitment. Potential members visit up to 2 sororities for one hour each. At each one, she may be greeted by someone who has been special to her during the week. This round can be the most emotional because the potential member is deciding which sorority she would most like to join. Parties are serious and subdued. Think back on the previous rounds and recall what you liked best about each sorority. The most important thing is to be sure you base your decision on your own feelings, not the feelings of family members, friends, or those in your recruitment group. After the final event, potential new members will list their sorority preferences. What to wear: For the last night of formal recruitment, a nice dress that one would wear to a wedding or similar special event is appropriate. Semiformal and formal dresses are too dressy.
DON'T DO Sunday, September 14 - Bid NightWhat to expect: Bids will be distributed in the afternoon at Methodist Temple Church, across from the sorority suites and the Ramona Apartments. All potential members receiving bids will gather at the church and be given a printed invitation to the sorority she has received a bid from. A potential member can only receive one bid. Then, she decides whether or not to take it. Those who accept their bids will proceed to the chapter suites of their new sorority where they will be welcomed by their new sisters with open arms. Each chapter will hold a reception for the new members. Each new member will be greeted by a member who will host her as her 'big sister' for the rest of the day's activities. During bid day, potential new members will meet and become better acquainted with the other new members and new sorority sisters. What to wear: There is no specified dress for the day. Most potential members choose to wear shorts and a t-shirt. Once a new member receives her bid, she will be given a t-shirt from her new sorority. The new members then change into their new shirts. So be sure to wear shorts or a skirt that can go with anything. You will be in A LOT of pictures with your new sisters, so be prepared to smile, smile, smile!
